About

Our story

The idea that became Brentwood Community Development Group began in 1971 when Judge Doug Matheson and Pastor Harry Meadows met to talk about the lack of affordable housing for seniors. From there, the Bissell Housing Corp. was born, and soon Reg Appleyard, a young CA, joined the Board and a search for land and financing began. In 1972, Matheson Seniors Highrise opened its doors, offering 420 suites to low income seniors.

With the purchase of Brentwood Homes in 1977, 176 units of family housing was added. That same year, we started our first rent geared to income subsidy program for low income families. In 1980 Brentwood Homes was expanded to add 31 more units, and in 2011 we built the 29-unit Brentwood Apartment, utilizing 29 green technologies including geothermal heat, solar PV and thermal panel heating.

Today, we continue to work with organizations in our communities to make our vision of safe, affordable housing for all a reality.
